January is always a difficult month. It’s cold, it’s dark, we’re (supposedly) depriving ourselves of naughty food and busting our chops in the gym. It’s enough to make anyone a bit mardy.
And so it came to pass that the first track in this week’s Headland Media Music Meeting is Alesha Dixon, ‘Do it our way’, AKA the soundtrack to the weightwatchers ad. Is she really the best role model for this campaign we all mused… has she ever been overweight? Either way, if she has been at the midnight doughnuts it’s not done anything for her songwriting skills, we concluded as C. voiced all of our secret aspirations… “I’d love to get fat, I’d love to not care and just eat what I liked. I love food.” Yep, that’s what a month of abstinence will do to you… give you the desire for morbid obesity.
Next was Cover Drive, ‘Twilight’. Who? Do they really like cricket? Does their obscenely high play rotation on Heart and Capital have ANYTHING to do with the fact they’re part of the same company? And does said company (Global) demonstrate a similar bias for The Wanted over One Direction? We couldn’t possibly say.
Emeli Sande, ‘Next To Me’. Talented but this didn’t really do it for us. We are looking forward to seeing what she does at the Brits though. (Research project… Has every Critics’ Choice award gone to a female solo artist in the last five years?)
Flo Rida, ‘Wild Ones’. What do you call the UK equivalent of Flo Rida? Brad Ford. (Unless you can come up with a better one? Answers on a tweet/post).
Lana Del Ray, ‘Born to die’. OK we’re back on the cynic bus again. Yes she’s got something, but what is that something. Is it her image? Is it the quirky videos (I want two pet tigers!)? Is it the hype-machine? Is she style over substance? Too many questions, no conclusions. But we felt it important that we redress the balance with a track that has no hype machine behind it whatsoever…
…No Ceremony, ‘HURTLOVE’. We know very little about them, but the video will have you hypnotised quicker than Paul McKenna. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtcwcZtwaZ0 (“MoonBulbMoonBulbMoonBulb… we are feeling very sleepy”).
Also in the mix were Coldplay, ‘Charlie Brown’, Redlight, ‘Get out of my head’ and Nadia Ali, ‘Rapture’ which had us looking forward to Ibiza… already… which is a bit torturous given it’s 0 degrees and forecast snow, but on the up side, it’s finally over! January is done, we made it… Woooo high fives all round!
